3i hires former Taros Capital manager for Benelux buyouts

Machtelt Groothius, previously a manager at beleaguered AlpInvest spinout Taros Capital, has joined London-listed 3i as a director in the Benelux buyouts team.

3i, a global private equity firm, has appointed Machtelt Groothuis, previously at Taros Capital Holdings, in its European buyout business.

Machtelt has joined 3i as a director in the European buyout group, based in its Amsterdam office. She will focus on mid-market buyouts across the Benelux.

Groothius: formerly at Taros Capital

Machtelt spent the last five years at Taros Capital, previously the Benelux- and Germany-focused mid-market buyout operation of private equity fund manager AlpInvest Partners, which spun out at the beginning of 2006. The firm recently abandoned plans for a €350 million ($440 million) buyout fund after AlpInvest withdrew its cornerstone investment.

A manager at Taros Capital, Machtelt led a number of transactions, including the de-listing of Delft Instruments and the sale of Euromate.

Before Taros Capital, Machtelt worked at McKinsey & Company, where she advised clients in the media and telecommunications sectors.

3i Benelux has invested €1.9 billion since its establishment in 1998, with the buyouts team focusing on mid-market buyouts of up to €1 billion. Recent transactions in the region include the €160 million buyout of airport ground handling business Aviapartner and the €80 million acquisition of international freight forwarder and logistics company ABX Logistics.
