Alemany will replace Isidre Fainé in the position. Last week, the board of directors of Spanish investment firm Criteria CaixaCorp approved the appointment of Fainé as its new chairman.
Alemany has served as the head of Abertis since the 2003 merger of Acesa Infraestructuras and Aurea Concesiones de Infraestructuras that created the firm. He also holds several leadership positions across Abertis’ infrastructure portfolio, including chief executive officer of its car parking subsidiary Saba and chairman of Abertis telecom.
Abertis’ main activity involves managing toll road assets globally, but the firm also manages car parking, logistics centers, airports and telecommunications assets.
Its US subsidiary won last year’s competition for a 75-year lease of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The deal did not close after the state’s legislature failed to vote on enabling legislation for the $12.8 billion lease offered by Abertis and Citi Infrastructure Investors.
Abertis will release its first quarter 2009 results tomorrow.
