Italian infrastructure developers will be at the front of the queue to benefit from new infrastructure projects in Libya, according to Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Speaking alongside Libyan leader Gaddafi at a press conference on his first official visit to Libya , Berlusconi said Italian companies would be in a “pole position” to land infrastructure contracts in the country, according to Reuters.
The Italian prime minister added that Italy would seek to increase the amount of energy it imports from Libya.
Earlier this week Libya awarded an €118 million ($165 million) contract to TAQA Arabia, a gas distributor backed by Egypt’s Citadel Capital, a private equity firm, to build the infrastructure for a gas distribution network linking 370,000 households across the country’s three major cities of Tripoli, Benghazi and Misurata.
