3i appoints oil and gas specialist

The London-listed private equity firm has increased its focus on the midstream gas and power industry with the appointment of an industrialist in residence.

European private equity firm 3i has appointed Shaun Kingsbury as an industrialist in residence to raise its profile in the midstream gas and power industry.

Kingsbury has worked in the midstream gas and power sector for the last 15 years, both in the UK and US. After graduating from the University of Ulster, he spent 10 years working for Shell in its liquefied natural gas, pipeline and energy trading divisions.

After that, he spent two years at Centrica in the US and was most recently commercial director for ITI Energy, which invests in energy-related technologies.

Kingsbury: identifying opportunities for 3i in oil and gas

Working for 3i’s Aberdeen and London offices, Kingsbury will assist the firm in expanding into the midstream gas, power and renewables markets. According to the firm, it has funded 24 percent of all European oil and gas private equity deals in the last three years.

Current oil and gas companies in 3i’s portfolio include: Vetco International, ABB’s former upstream oil and gas business; EDP, an oilfield development project manager; Epcon Offshore, a Norwegian designer and manufacturer of water treatment systems for the oil and gas industry; and Salamander Energy, an exploration and production company focused on South East Asia.

Graeme Sword, 3i’s head of oil, gas and power, said in a statement that the appointment would be invaluable in helping to identify and develop opportunities in the sector: “Our commitment to the upstream oil and gas industry remains strong, but the time is right for us to broaden our horizons.”
