During 2022, KKR established a joint venture with Telefonica to establish ONNET Colombia, Colombia’s first nationwide open access fibre platform. It also achieved full realisations with the sale of its 40 percent stake in Telxius to Telefonica and Pontegadea, while acquiring a significant Latin American energy portfolio through its investment in Contour Global. Contour Global is a wholesale power generation company with around 6.3GW of capacity in operation across 20 countries in Europe, North America, Africa and Latin America, with plans for significant organic and inorganic value-accretive growth.

Global Infrastructure Partners acquired Atlas Renewable Energy from Actis. Atlas is Latin America’s second largest independent renewables developer. The company owns 14 fully contracted solar assets that produce 2.3GW of installed capacity across Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay, and GIP plans a scaling of the platform to other renewable energy technologies. Founded in 2016, the developer has increased its installed capacity five-fold over a four-and-a-half-year period. There are now plans for further expansion into new markets and new technologies.

The winner of Latin America Deal of the Year is also the Latin America Energy Transition Deal of the Year. Global Infrastructure Partners’ investment in Atlas Renewable Energy, which it acquired from Actis, was a landmark deal for the region, involving 2.2GW of installed solar capacity in countries including Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay. The company is the second largest independent renewables developer in Latin America and the plans are to grow it still further.
