Ex-BP Solar pro to bolster Akin Gump

A lawyer with extensive experience in energy infrastructure has joined Akin Gump. The law firm has been beefing up its energy practice throughout 2011.

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Field continued to expand its project finance and renewable energy practice, hiring general counsel Baird Fogel yesterday. Fogel previously worked for BP Solar, the solar power subsidiary of oil and gas giant BP.

The corporate law firm in 2011 has added substantial manpower to its renewable energy unit. In May, Akin Gump poached a 14-member energy team from law firm Chadbourne & Parke, including Adam Umanoff and Edward Zaelke, who headed the Chadbourne & Parke team. Umanoff and Zaelke now co-head Akin Gump’s renewable energy practice.

In addition, Akin Gump in September landed Thomas Trimble and Jeremy Schwer, who rejoined the law firm following a stint with Hunton & Williams. That month, Akin Gump also hired renewable energy veteran David Burton from GE Energy Financial.

But the hires go back to 2010, when Akin Gump hired Robert Nelson, Dino Barajas and Elliot Hinds to beef up its renewable energy practice.

Chairman Bruce McLean has called renewable energy a “strategic priority” for Akin Gump.

“Our goal at Akin Gump is to continue to expand our project and renewable energy practice globally,” said Umanoff. He went on to state that 40 people work within the Akin Gump renewable energy practice.
