Global buyout firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts has appointed Leigh Clifford as a senior adviser to its Australian operations.
Clifford joins from Australia’s national airline, Qantas Airways, where he was chairman of the board. Before that, Clifford was the chief executive of Rio Tinto, a mining and exploration company. He spent 37 years at Rio Tinto, where he held operational and marketing roles in Australia and overseas.
At KKR, Clifford will provide strategic counsel and help identify opportunities for investors while partnering with managers to strengthen businesses in Australia, according to a statement.
In 2006, the firm acquired BIS Industries, a Sydney-based outsourced supplier of on-site and off-site materials handling and logistics services to the minerals, metals and coal mining sectors, and Seven Media Group, an Australian media company.
KKR has a global network of senior advisors which includes Sanjiv Ahuja, former chief executive officer of telecommunications operator Orange; John Bond, former group chairman of HSBC Holdings, and Bruce Duncan, chairman of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide.
