€86m funding boost for Spanish transport infra(4)

The European Union is to provide €86 million of funding to support Spain’s transport infrastructure. The stimulus will benefit four projects across the road and rail sectors and will make Spain the biggest beneficiary of the infrastructure funding package.

Spain is set to receive €86 million of funding from the European Union (EU) to boost the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

The funding, which forms part of the EU’s European Economic Recovery Plan, makes Spain the biggest beneficiary of the package, ahead of Italy which has received €80 million.

The Hiniesta-Perilla-Otero de Bodas-Cernadillas high speed railway line project in Galicia has been allocated just over €35 million of funding from the package, while the SE-40 ring road in Seville will receive €24 million. Also to benefit from the stimulus are the Valladolid-Burgos-Vitoria rail link and a section of the A-32 highway in the Jaén province, receiving €15.4 million and €11 million respectively.

The funding is still subject to approval by the European Commission. Spain is set to assume presidency of the European Union in January next year.

In May Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero proposed mobilising over €20 billion, comprising both public and private funding, towards renewable energy and infrastructure projects over the next two years, as part of the country’s economic stimulus plan.
