A Hong Kong infrastructure contractor has won a local tender to construct a HK$3.7 billion ($477 million) sewage tunneling system for the government.
Gammon Construction, which is 50 percent owned by UK engineering giant Balfour Beatty, will aim to finish 12 kilometers of tunneling in 2014 as part of the Hong Kong Harbour Area Treatment Scheme. The tunnels will collect and convey preliminarily treated sewage along the north of Hong Kong Island and under Victoria Harbour to Stonecutters Island for chemical treatment.
The other half of Gammon is owned by Jardine Matheson, the Asian trading and manufacturing group.
It is the largest infrastructure contract the firm has ever won.
