A sample of the questions which formed the framework of the 2020 Licence to Operate roundtable:

How does keeping your licence to operate feature in the course of doing business? Specifically:

  1. How does it feature at fund level?
  2. How do you ensure your portfolio companies are good stewards of the assets they manage and operate?

What kind of buy-in does licence to operate have across your organisation? Is it championed at C-level? Confined to a ‘head of ESG’ to enforce? Is it equally embraced by the deal and asset-management teams?

Maintaining one’s license to operate is inherently tied to ESG. Can you detail your ESG policies? How are you measuring and reporting on ESG? Do you feature in third-party benchmarks like GRESB and/or UNPRI?

Climate change is higher than it’s ever been on the agenda today. It’s also obviously tied to licence to operate, as consumers and politicians become increasingly intolerant of firms perceived to be climate laggards. Can you detail your efforts in being a good environmental citizen? Do you have emissions reductions targets across the portfolio? Do you have any assets particularly at risk that may need adaptation measures? And if so, how costly are these initiatives?

Is the industry doing enough to communicate they are good stewards of the assets they manage and how they add value to them? And if not, what needs to change?

An important part of licence to operate is demonstrating that firms mirror the societies in which they operate. Diversity of gender, thought and social background are part of that. So is equality of pay. How are your firms addressing these issues and responding to LPs’ greater focus on the subject?
