As the world’s most fossil fuel-reliant sector, transportation must shift gears if it is to deliver real, long-lasting change and meet climate targets. The industry will need everything in its toolkit to slash emissions and raise operational performance. For transport, the shift to sustainability includes the opportunity to digitalise, which will no doubt play a decisive role in lowering the industry’s carbon footprint and achieving net zero.

Global energy transition investment surpassed $1 trillion last year, according to BloombergNEF, but the average annual investment must treble over the rest of the decade to get on track for net zero. The challenge is considerable, but infrastructure investors are stepping up and certainly aren’t short on options, as the latest Energy Transition report testifies.
Good intentions are not enough; impact investments must be real and quantifiable. That is why a number of frameworks have been developed, with early leaders starting to emerge. As measurement frameworks proliferate, so too do investment opportunities – the Global Impact Investing Network notes there are $1.2 trillion of impact investing assets under management, and a wealth of those are open to infrastructure investors.
