Barclays brings on Biffa banker(3)

Mark Todd, whose past mandates include advising UK waste manager Biffa on its sales to GIP and Montagu Private Equity, has left Citi to join the European M&A team at BarCap.

Barclays Capital, the investment banking arm of UK banking group Barclays, has hired Mark Todd, an M&A specialist, from rival Citi. The move is seen as extending BarCap’s efforts to build out its European M&A advisory platform.

At Citi, Todd advised on large-cap transactions including Biffa, the UK waste management group, when it was sold to funds managed by Global Infrastructure Partners and Montagu Private Equity. The deal completed in 2008, valuing Biffa at £1.2 billion ($1.9 billion).

According to Reuters, Todd’s appointment is part of a recruitment push aimed at propelling BarCap into a leading position in European M&A banking. The firm, which last year bought the US investment banking operation of Lehman Brothers, has recently hired senior investment bankers and M&A specialists from Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and UBS.

At BarCap, Todd will be reunited with former Citi infrastructure specialist Mark Ponsonby, who became the firm's European M&A co-head earlier this year.
