Meketa Investment Group (Meketa), a Boston-based consulting firm focusing on real assets, is fast expanding its footprint with the addition of a new office in Portland, Oregon, following the opening of a new office in London last month.
Mika Malone, a principal of the firm, will head the Portland office, the firm said in a statement.
“The focus of the Portland office is to continue to expand along the lines that we have in our Boston and San Diego offices, which is focusing on public funds and Taft-Hartley funds, and as opportunities arise also looking at endowment and corporate opportunities,” Malone told Infrastructure Investor.
The office opened its doors officially on July 15 having added the Alaska United Food and Commercial Workers Union as a new client two weeks ago. Meketa will be the general consultant for the union’s pension fund.
Malone is currently the only employee at the new office but plans on adding one to three people within the first year and then expanding the team as the office grows.
“I was the second employee in the San Diego office and now they’re 28 employees there and over 70 in Boston so I’m really hoping to grow the Portland office like we’ve grown our other offices,” she said.
A principal at Meketa since 2004, Malone was based in the firm’s San Diego office for the past 10 years. In addition to heading the Portland office, Malone is the lead consultant for five clients on their defined benefit, endowment, and defined contribution plans.
Her work includes developing asset allocation policy, selecting investment managers, and developing investment strategy for clients. She is also a member of the firm’s compliance, defined contribution, and environmental and social governance committees.
The opening of the Portland and London offices coincided with Meketa’s recent 35th anniversary. “Meketa Investment Group’s first client is still a client today,” the firm’s founder and chief executive James Meketa said. According to the statement, the firm’s annual client turnover has averaged less than 3 percent.
Founded in 1978, Meketa is a full service investment consulting and advisory firm. Since 1993, it has been advising clients on real estate, infrastructure, and natural resources.
Its clients include Taft-Hartley funds, public funds, corporates and non-profits. The firm consults on more than $300 billion in assets for over 90 clients whose total aggregate institutional assets exceed $600 billion.
