Hoping for a break-down

On the theme of infrastructure losing its ‘boring’ tag, we were sad to read the widely reported press rumours that the Lotus Formula One motor racing team may soon be bought out by Renault, which previously owned the team from 2002 to 2011.

After all, Gerard Lopez, the current team boss of Lotus – which is majority owned by his investment firm, Genii Capital – has now made a significant move into infrastructure investment. His arrival on the infra scene brings with it yet further evidence that the asset class is now all about excitement and glamour.

But if the reports of a takeover prove correct, will Lopez soon revert to being just a plain old investor? If it did happen, we’re pinning our hopes on him moving to another team – or setting up a new one – as soon as possible.
