As one of the largest and oldest infrastructure investors, the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System had seen bumps in the road before covid-19 came along last year. That made it well-equipped to demonstrate its resilience to a unique crisis, with the Canadian pension plan generating an 8.6 percent return for 2020, despite seeing private equity and real estate returns tumble.

Philippe Busslinger, OMERS’ European infrastructure chief, in conversation with Zak Bentley, provided unique insight into what made the portfolio tick, despite owning traffic-exposed transport assets and regulated networks that were subject to scrutiny like never before.
